Not all Online Sign Language Courses are equal

On my mission to learn Sign Language in 2021, I did what most people would do and went to Google and searched “learn sign language”. A few places popped up and I realised as I’m the UK, I needed to be a little bit more specific, as in the UK it’s called British Sign Language or BSL. So, I went on to search “Learn British Sign Language online”.

I’m no stranger to Google search engine results being a mixture of paid ad listing and listings that naturally pop up on the first page due to their ranking by Google. I wanted a good deal, so I clicked on some of the paid ads which pop up right at the top and here’s where my confusions began.

I found website that offered BSL courses which seemed like a bargain, I could apparently sign up online and learn BSL Level 1 and BSL Level 2 and get certified at an 89% discounted price of just £14.00 – This was “a deal not to miss” I thought. But my gut was saying “you get what you pay for”. So, I investigated further to find out what I’m getting for my money, this course was a video-based course, and it was accredited by CPD, and from visual memory of doing other CPD based courses in the past, I noticed this CPD logo looked different. Now my spider senses really started to tingle, but I thought meh I’ll just click another course provider.

Back to Google I went and made my search, and as before I got lots of Academy’s and Schools of “excellence” pop up at the top. I clicked on the ones that looked interesting and again there where some amazing offers, some even cheaper than the first one I saw. But again, the same place was accrediting these places. I kind of went down the rabbit hole after this, I really needed to know what’s going on. I’ll let you know what I found out, but first let me tell you what I did next.

Leaving behind these courses which seemed a little bogus, I moved on to checking out the natural listing on Google and I came across British Sign Language course providers who seem to be the real deal, there was still a huge mix of prices and course lengths to choose from, but at least these places looked like they were specialists in teaching British Sign Language.

Many of the more specialist British Sign Language course providers where accredited by the actual CPD logo I am used to seeing as well as an accreditor called Signature and iBSL. Courses provided by these centres where of different lengths and as I wanted to learn online, I looked for centre’s which offered evening BSL courses online.

I found many that took 15 to 20 weeks to teach BSL, the problem with that for me was that I may not be able to commit for so many weeks. I eventually found a place which offered BSL Level 1 course online for 5 weeks in the evening. And as I like a good deal, this place was offering the first sign language lesson for free. I was sold! If you want to Learn Sign Language Online, this is the place to do it.

Now going back to the bogus training sites, when I went down the rabbit hole, I found that many of the British Sign Language courses on offer from these companies was pre-recorded video-based stuff which was being shared by all the companies, these companies also offered courses in every aspect of life you can imagine. There’s even a course on one of the sites on how to become a witch! Now that CPD logo that was causing me to question things, at closer inspection it turns out they’re called CPD Group and have nothing to do with the actual CPD accreditors. The CPD group provide free accreditations to online “training” sites which co-incidentally offer courses which the CPD group have created, and they sell on a wholesale basis to these “training” sites that love to give themselves names like Academy, or International School of… or Oxford & Cambridge blah blah blah.

Personally, I think it’s a not right to be filling the internet up with sub-standard courses and fake certificates, it creates confusion and genuine people who want to learn a subject will end up buying these cheap courses and not really learning anything. And I guess due to the price, people will most likely not even bother chasing them for a refund.

Here this, one of these fake Academy’s was even selling student ID’s so you can get discounts. Isn’t that like borderline fraud?

Anyways, I’m glad I didn’t end up buying these too good to be true online BSL courses and instead found an expert to learn from.

Brown is the new Black

The last couple of years saw a rise in cars being released in white. It’s a cool colour but it’s starting to get boring. So it’s good news to see that 2010 seems to be bringing new hues into the market; the most popular seems to be shades of Brown. As always fashion trends always go full circle, so seeing brown cars reminds me of my dad’s car back when I was just 8 years old, he use to drive a chocolate brown Ford Escort. As I got older I remember joy riding around in a brown Mini Metro, luckily I never got caught. The first brown car I saw was the Audi R8 Spyder, which looked amazing. As more cars got released with the new 10 registration plate it seems it’s the new trend and Brown has become the new black. My favourite new car in brown is the Porsche 997 Turbo Cabriolet, followed closely by the Audi R8 Spyder. I’ve even seen an Audi A3 in a really dark brown colour which I loved. The most affordable brown car I would go for would be the Citroen DS3; I should p...

I made a mistake while “designing” this car...

I’m always keen to check out the cars of the future, so when I hear about a new car being released I’m usually straight on Google searching for an image of the new car. And when it comes to cars with a prestige ancestry I usually get even more excited. Until recently, I’ve now started to think these “designers” are making a mistake and I wish I had pursued my dream career of being a car designer; maybe I could have helped the industry. I’ll start with my most recent disaster design. I’m a big BMW Fan and when they go and make things like the New BMW X1, it really breaks my heart and makes me feel sick. The BMW X1 is basically the 4x4 version of.....you guessed it, the BMW 1 Series! Why we need another rubbish 4x4 is beyond me. The next one almost brings me to tears and I’ve mentioned it before, the Aston Martin Cygnet. Why would Aston Martin even think about making this, it’s not even their own car design disaster! Toyota made the mistake and for some reason Aston...

Laziness or Genius – Honda’s Walking Assist

The world of Honda Innovations is a fascinating place. I recently came across this new invention and I had to really look twice to even accept that such an idea was thought up by somebody. At first I looked at it and thought, this is the world getting lazier by day. Surely we don’t need a machine to help us walk around; I thought we had the whole walking thing mastered centuries ago. The device didn’t look very attractive either and I couldn’t imagine seeing people walking around with a machine strapped to their legs. I thought I’d give the idea a chance and read further into the Walking Assist section on the Honda website. They claim this is a device to help people perform physically demanding activities, by making the body weight seem lighter. Effectively it helps reduce the load off your legs, while climbing up stairs, which apparently helps reduce fatigue and physical exertion. I suppose I can see the benefits of Honda’s Walking Assist, especially for people w...
